Education and Care
Early Childhood Scholarship Programs
Since the implementation of the National Quality Framework the ACT Government has been working closely with the early childhood education and care sector to manage the ongoing developments, with particular attention being given to the changes in qualification requirements for early childhood educators.
In order to support the sector's commitment to continuous improvement under the NQF and against the National Quality Standards (NQS), the ACT Government allocated funding for the establishment of two early childhood scholarship programs.
The Early Childhood (Certificate III) Scholarship Program was established in response to the need for workforce development to meet the requirement of the National Quality Framework that all educators must have or be actively working towards at least a minimum Certificate III qualification. The Program has been operating since 2012, and was extended in 2013-14 and again in 2014-15 for a further two years.
Scholarships are awarded on merit following assessment of all applications against specific criteria. Each scholarship includes funding for:
- full course fees paid to the registered training authority delivering the course
- a start up incentive payment of $300 and a completion incentive payment of $500 paid to each scholarship recipient
- employers for staff backfill to release students to study during their working hours.
Applications for the 2015 round of scholarship offers open on 13 February 2015 and close on 13 March 2015.

The Early Childhood Degree Scholarship Program provides financial assistance for gaining an approved early childhood teaching qualification to individuals who are either already working in or want to work in the ACT's education and care sector.
Scholarship recipients are entitled to funding of up to $1,500 per financial year to a maximum of $6,000 over four consecutive years towards costs associated with attaining the early childhood teaching qualification, including:
- course fees
- purchased leave for study release or attendance at classes, residential schools or practicum placements
- course-required materials, equipment, text books and other learning aids, and learning support services such as tutoring.
The first 25 scholarships under this program have been awarded. A further 25 new scholarships will be offered in mid 2015.
