The Education Directorate continues to build and expand public schools right across the Territory. We are working hard to ensure that every child has access to great, accessible and sustainable facilities and school infrastructure that supports high quality education in our growing city.

With comprehensive planning and work underway we ensure all ACT public schools are located to meet their enrolment area’s needs and are inclusively and sustainably designed.

Between 2022 to 2025, Canberrans will see five new schools open with three of these to accommodate growth in Gungahlin; one of the fastest growing regions in Australia.

Throsby School opened its doors at the start of the 2022 school year as the ACT’s 90th public school. Throsby caters for 450 kindergarten to year 6 students and 130 preschool students. The school includes high quality learning environments, incorporating both indoor and outdoor learning areas, as well as integrated and inclusive spaces to support all students.

Evelyn Scott School in Denman Prospect continues to expand with the high school campus opening in 2023 for year 7 to 10 students. High school enrolments for Evelyn Scott School will open 26 April 2022.

High schools in the new suburbs of Kenny and Taylor are set to open for the start of the 2024 school year. Each school will cater for 800 students from years 7 to 10. These high schools will provide state-of-the-art facilities.

Design work is underway for a preschool to year 6 school and early childhood education centre in Strathnairn, Ginninderry’s first suburb. The school and early childhood education centre are set to open for the 2025 school year.

All new and expanded public schools in the ACT will operate with net zero carbon emissions to help move towards the ACT Government’s new zero emissions target by 2045.
