Reigning champs Amaroo School win first place in world language competition

Students in years 7-10 at Amaroo School have snapped up a number of prizes in the recent Education Perfect Language Competitions, both regionally and worldwide.

The school placed 1st of 33 schools in the ACT for the French and Japanese sections of the Education Perfect ACT Regional Championship, which took place from July 28 - August 4, 2020.

Amaroo School was one of 38 ACT schools competing in the Education Perfect World Championships. They placed 1st in Japanese, beating out 1412 schools from around the world, and came 8th for French out of 1554 schools.

The online competition sees students individually answer questions on the language they’re studying, with a point awarded for every 3 correct answers given. These points are then tallied up to determine the school’s total. In the regional championships alone, Amaroo School scored a whopping 428 428 points.

Rahul is a school captain at Amaroo and has taken French classes since he was in primary school. He spent hours each day online perfecting his understanding of French and personally contributed over 10 000 points for his school.

“Not only is it a great learning resource for our school, but it’s a source of friendly competition amongst our classes. All the students love taking part in the Language Perfect Competition,” said Rahul.

Yantong is a year 9 student at Amaroo but takes year 10 Japanese to challenge herself and make the most of her opportunities to learn. She was also a high achiever in the Language Perfect Competition.

“The championships were difficult but very educational. I’m so grateful to have taken part in the competition, it’s helped me expand my vocabulary in Japanese,” said Yantong.

Both students credit their teachers, both past and present, for nurturing a love for language early on, and inspiring them to continue learning in the future.

The school staff couldn’t be happier with their students’ achievements and are proud to see how the students have taken on a keen interest for learning a language.

“Our success in Education Perfect is testament to the great teaching we have at Amaroo School, as well as our amazing students and their shared passion for learning languages,” said Secondary Principal, Diana Whymark.

“We are so proud of all our students who competed! It was an incredible effort and they were very driven,” said Kiraly Middleton, Executive Teacher, Languages.
