The ACT Government’s Teacher Shortage Taskforce has delivered its recommendations into how the system can best respond to workforce challenges across our public schools.
The report highlights a strong commitment between the Australian Education Union (AEU) and the Education Directorate to continue to work together closely and collaboratively, to understand and respond to teacher workforce challenges across ACT public schools.
Key recommendations of the report include:
- Encouraging the use of inbuilt relief teachers in all schools
- Developing centrally funded incentives for recently retired teachers or teachers to return from long-term leave
- Actively monitoring and identify schools experiencing acute and ongoing teacher shortages
- Implementing targeted and differentiated strategies and initiatives to support schools with teacher shortage challenges
- Re-visiting the current casual relief model
- Retaining and supporting new and current teachers
The report also includes a recommendation to develop a Five-year Classroom Teacher Attraction and Retention Plan by 2023 – with clear deliverables and timelines for implementation.
Further, the ACT will continue to work with other states and jurisdictions on the wider commitment to a National Teacher Workforce Action Plan.
