Teachers play a key role in our community. The ACT Government remains committed to ensuring all avenues are pursued to build and retain our teaching workforce.

A draft National Teacher Workforce Action Plan has been released by the Australian Government which focusses on ways to build the respect and reputation of the profession, encourage more young people to become a teacher, better prepare teachers for the classroom, tackle workload issues, and make sure governments have the right data.

The community is invited to view the plan and provide feedback on its recommendations.

The plan has been developed by a working group led by the Australian Government, along with States and Territories, unions, principals’ representatives, and university representatives.

In December 2022 State and Territory Education Ministers will meet to review the feedback and finalise this work.

This complements what is already being done in the ACT.

In August 2022 the ACT Government released its Teacher Shortage Taskforce Report, developed in collaboration with the Australian Education Union, and is continue work on a five-year Teacher Recruitment and Retention Strategy which will be released in early 2023.

Consultation on the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan is open until 1 December 2022. To view the full draft plan and provide feedback visit https://www.education.gov.au/ntwapExternal Link.
