Inclusion and Wellbeing
For every child and young person, feeling as though they belong, feeling confident and being engaged fully in their class and school activities is vital to their success at school. ACT public schools aim to create a positive school culture and environment, to help all children and young people feel safe, connected and respected, achieve success and be fully engaged in their learning.
The Education Directorate is committed to inclusive education.
Under the Student Resource Allocation Program, the Directorate is currently reviewing its support for Students with Disability in Canberra public schools. This review focuses on the effectiveness of existing policies, structures, and processes that support students across the system including how Canberra public schools respond to student diversity.
The Education Services Australia Student Wellbeing Hub defines wellbeing as ‘the combination of a person's intellectual, physical, mental, emotional and social health.’
The National Safe Schools Framework is a whole-school approach to wellbeing which aims to help schools create safe, supportive and respectful teaching and learning communities where everyone's wellbeing is important. This leads to:
- students who feel safe and valued and have a sense of belonging at school can begin to develop healthy and respectful relationships within that community.
- greater self-esteem and improved learning outcomes.
ACT public schools adhere to the National Safe Schools Framework guiding principles:
- Affirm the rights of all members of the school community to feel safe and be safe at school.
- Acknowledge that being safe and supported at school is essential for student wellbeing and effective learning.
- Accept responsibility for developing and sustaining safe and supportive learning and teaching communities that also fulfil the school’s child protection responsibilities.
- Encourage the active participation of all school community members in developing and maintaining a safe school community where diversity is valued.
- Actively support young people to develop understanding and skills to keep themselves and others safe.
- Commit to developing a safe school community through a whole-school and evidence-based approach.
What Can You Expect?
Children, young people, their parents and carers, teachers and school staff and the broader community can expect Canberra public schools to be a positive and engaging environment where young people feel connected, respected, achieve success and are fully engaged in their learning.
To achieve this, the ACT Education Safe and Supportive Schools policy and guidance material guides schools and their wider communities to:
- build the self awareness, self management, social awareness and social management capabilities of students to engage in respectful relationships as well as applying restorative and disciplinary measures;
- support teachers to meet the social and emotional needs of students in the school environment;
- foster an engaging school environment;
- consult the school community in the development of school processes and procedures;
- ensure schools are organised in ways that provide a duty of care;
- value diversity and promote positive social behaviour;
- support students requiring intensive, individualised behavioural support in an appropriate and timely manner.
