Canberra’s five Early Childhood Schools offer a unique model of integrated services catering for children and their families from birth through age 8.
Early Childhood Schools are an important element of the ACT public school system. The schools are built on a highly successful model of early years learning designed to provide children with the best start to their early development and education. They offer integrated services for children birth to 8 years or 4 to 8 years and their families.
Early Childhood Schools are based on the philosophy that learning begins at birth and supports a child’s learning and development through to their transition to school. Early Childhood Schools provide educational programs and services that promote children’s health and wellbeing and help build strong relationships with families and communities, including making connections with community services.
Enrolment applications for preschool to year 2 in these schools are assessed against the following criteria, in the order of priority indicated:
- Individual circumstances, based on student wellbeing
- Child lives in the ACT and has a sibling attending the school
- Child lives in the ACT and attends the early childhood education and care program (birth – 4) at the school*
- Child lives in the suburb where the school is located
- Child lives elsewhere in the ACT.
* This criterion does not apply to the O’Connor Cooperative School setting.
Transitioning to primary school
At the end of year 2, children from Early Childhood Schools can apply for year 3 at an ACT public school and are guaranteed a place at the school in their Priority Enrolment Area.
Any new application submitted for the same student in the same year will override all earlier applications and current offers.
