The Education Directorate welcomes the dependants of refugee, humanitarian or protection visa subclasses 200, 201, 202, 203, 204 and 866 to enrol into an ACT public school from Preschool through to Year 12. In the ACT, a child is of compulsory education age from the age of six. For preschool aged children, enrolment placement for the dependants of temporary residents is subject to the availability of places. Please note, children must be four years of age by 30 April in the year they commence preschool.
It is a Department of Home Affairs requirement that all Australian permanent residents must maintain adequate schooling arrangements for school-aged dependants.
As permanent residents of Australia, holders of a refugee, humanitarian or protection visa may enrol their dependants directly into an ACT public school in the same manner as Australian citizens and are not liable for international student tuition fees.
Please Note: the priority placement areas for student enrolment apply to the dependants of refugee, humanitarian or protection visa as they do for all Australian citizens.

Asylum seekers applying for Refugee, Humanitarian or Protection Visas and who are currently on a bridging visa, are eligible for fee exemption for their dependants to enrol into an ACT public school. The appropriate documents must be provided to the International Education Unit by fax on +61 2 6205 9239 or by emailing the email@example.com. In order to avoid a delay in the processing of the fee exemption request, all documentation and evidence should be submitted.
Please Note: all three documents must be supplied at the same time before the fee exemption can be processed:
- Proof of ACT residential address. For example, a property lease or a utilities account.
- Copy of Protection Visa Acknowledgement (PVA) letter from the Department of Home Affairs.
- Copy of the ACT Services Access Card
