Vocational Learning Programs
Vocational Learning Programs (VLP) provide short career education and vocational learning programs for students in Years 9 to 12, helping students to develop basic industry knowledge and skills to increase their career readiness.
Previously known as Vocational Learning Options, the new programs will increase access to vocational and workplace learning, opportunities for students across all stages of career readiness.
VLPs are tailored to student and industry needs including:
- universal programs comprising mostly accredited training delivered in partnership with industry and registered training organisations (RTOs)
- targeted programs comprising mostly non-accredited training that focus on providing students with a pathway to employment and/or accredited vocational learning options.
Vocational Learning Programs are available in a range of industries such as building and construction, electrical, hospitality, business, community services, health, and creative digital technologies.
School careers advisors or workplace learning coordinators will share information about VLPs with students. Parents can also view information using their student’s school Career Tools website or by emailing the Education Directorate’s Careers and Vocational Pathways team at careers@act.gov.au
Canberra Institute of Technology and private Registered Training Organisations
The ACT Education Directorate uses both the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) and private Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) through a fee-for-service arrangement or grants program.
An RTO is an organisation that provides Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualifications such as:.
- Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes (such as CIT)
- adult and community education providers
- agricultural colleges
- industry skill centres
- commercial and enterprise training providers
- some universities, higher education providers, and high schools.
All training providers on My Skills are Registered Training Organisations. This means they are registered by a state or territory or national regulator (ASQA) recognition authority to deliver training and/or conduct assessments and issue nationally recognised qualifications.
Only RTOs can:
- Deliver nationally recognised courses and accredited Australian Qualifications Framework VET qualifications.
- Apply for Australian state and territory funding to deliver vocational education and training.
More information on RTOs that have scope to deliver in the ACT is available at https://www.myskills.gov.au/
