Hydrotherapy Pools - School Use Policy

  1. What is this policy about?
    1. This policy sets out the minimum requirements to be observed by schools in the use by students of hydrotherapy pools located in ACT public schools.
    2. This policy does not cover hire of these pools to community users. These arrangements are at the discretion of principals and covered by the Community Use of School Facilities.
  2. Policy Statement
    1. Hydrotherapy pools are for the use of students with disability and for other therapeutic purposes.
    2. Hydrotherapy pools are to be used in accordance with the ACT Health ACT Swimming and Spa Pools Code of Practice.
    3. Hydrotherapy pools are not to be used:
      • for the primary purpose of teaching personal self care
      • by students who medical and other conditions as set out in the procedures to this policy
      • by students who are totally dependent, until their medical status has been clarified
  3. Who does this policy apply to?
    1. This policy applies to ACT public schools that have hydrotherapy pools and ACT public schools that may use hydrotherapy pools from time to time.
  4. Context
    1. Hydrotherapy pools can be of benefit for students with disability. Their safety and wellbeing, as well as those of accompanying staff, when using hydrotherapy pools is a priority.
    2. Hydrotherapy pools are located in four ACT public schools - Black Mountain, Turner, Cranleigh and Malkara.
  5. Responsibilities
    1. The principal: is responsible for implementing this policy, including:
      • the management, maintenance and administration of pool facilities in accordance with this policy and associated procedures, other Directorate policies relating to community use of school facilities, maintenance of hydrotherapy pools and relevant health regulations.
      • ensuring the school uses the pool only for students with disability and for other therapeutic purposes.
    2. Policy Owner: The Director, Student Engagement is responsible for this policy.
  6. Monitoring and Review
    1. The Policy Owner monitors the policy. This includes an annual scan of operation and review. A full review of the policy will be conducted within a three year period.
