Welcome from the Principal

Hawker College is focused on improving learning outcomes for every student.

Our Vision: As a community of learning we engage and inspire each other to achieve our potential.

Our Mission: Hawker College is dedicated to providing high quality academic, vocational and social programs that improve learning outcomes for all students and enable them to successfully realise their individual potential and future pathways.

Our Values: Honesty Excellence Fairness Respect

A Strong Record

Since 1976, Hawker has maintained a reputation for excellence in the provision of nationally recognised academic, vocational and pastoral care programs. We have established a tradition over many years as a welcoming and caring learning community, led by experienced and passionate teachers with high levels of expertise in our excellent specialist facilities.

A Positive Ethos

Our expectation is that every student will achieve their individual potential, supported by innovative and responsive provision for a broad range of pathways, learning needs and student interests. We aim to help develop the “whole person” in preparation for whatever life may bring them.

Our students show a high level of commitment in their participation in both college educational programs and extra-curricular pursuits. We value the high standards to which our students aspire, the enterprise they show and the respectful, purposeful and supportive ethos of our college community. Scope for student leadership and enterprise is evident through our College’s Student Representative Council and in the range of other student action groups at our college. 21st Century skills and authentic learning are prioritised through the many opportunities to connect learning in the curriculum with the outside world and for students to be agents for positive change, now and in their futures.

Support for Success in Senior Secondary Education

To ensure that our students reach their full potential, we provide extensive support services that focus on course and careers planning and welfare support. The college was recognised for the high standard of this provision through MindMatters accreditation at the end of 2013 and through the school validation process in 2015. Hawker is a student-centred college. Our students are encouraged to participate in the many extra-curricular activities provided to make new friends and to develop and broaden their interests. We have high expectations in relation to academic performance, attendance and behaviour. MI (Mentoring and Information) Group teachers, supported by a Year Coordinator for each year, monitor the overall progress of each student in their care during their time with us.

Community Links

The college continually develops strong links with the Belconnen network of schools across P-12 years. Students are given every opportunity to connect to the local and broader community. Partnerships such as those with IRT Kangara Waters and YMCA Early Learning Centre Belconnen and Uniting Care enhance these connections. Our partnership with parents and the community is strongly valued. Parents are welcome at Hawker. Successful partnerships with parents are integral to improving outcomes for students.
