Preschool students at Hughes Primary School were excited to officially open their upgraded learning area earlier this week. The new play space, which includes new e quipment and a protective shade sail, will allow the students to play and learn safely while also being protected from the elements.

Hughes Primary School Principal Nina McCabe believes the upgrades will improve the overall learning and play space available at the preschool.

“The students are thrilled with it, they love the new slide and the suspension bridge!” Ms McCabe said.

“It’s fantastic to see the imaginative games the students are creating and enjoying in the new play space.

“This sort of space is vital for a young student’s development and it is great to see these upgrades completed at Hughes Primary School.”

The space was opened with an official ribbon cutting, overseen by excited students and community members.

Preschool students were involved throughout the project, providing ideas in the initial stages and keenly watching the installation unfold. The official opening event was also organised by the students themselves, who made a welcome sign, designated VIP seating and invited members of the school community. Having students provide their voice and efforts into the process not only ensured their excitement about the project but was also a valuable learning experience.

The upgraded play space was a collaborative project facilitated between Hughes Primary School and the ACT Education Directorate. This project forms part of the ACT Government’s commitment of $85m (over four years) to improve educational infrastructure across our public schools.
