Bonython Primary School is going to war on waste in their school community, while also raising money for their Year 6 graduation activities.
This year the school has put a renewed focus on sustainability. From growing vegetables on site through to reusing bottle lids for STEM classes, Bonython Primary students are making an active effort to be responsible global citizens.
This extends to them embracing the ACT’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS). A team of environmentally conscious students at the school scours the playgrounds, garbage bins and open spaces of the school for recyclable containers they can deposit.
So far in 2019 the students have raised a little over $50, all of which will go towards making their Year 6 graduation event at the end of the year a little more special.
Deputy Principal Marc Warwick, who is coordinating the program at the school, said the work the students are doing aligns with the school’s vision – Learning with Purpose and Passion.
“We want our students to be active and informed citizens,” Mr Warwick said. “Our kids are highly aware that sustainability is an important issue.
“Waste management is important and there are things we can do – our kids are solution-focused.
“The CDS program we’re running is a simple but effective way for our kids to address the issue of recycling.”
