The Future of Education Ideas Summit Listening Report
The Listening Report is a summary of the discussions of the Future of Education Summit held on 20 October 2023. The Summit brought together diverse voices from across the ACT education system to celebrate five years of the Future of Education Strategy, reflecting on the journey so far and facilitating ideas for the final phase of the 10-year strategy.
The Summit workshops generated a range of comments covering current strengths and challenges, aspirations for schools and ideas to further improve education in the ACT. The Listening Report summarises almost 2000 comments provided by participants at facilitated workshops.

Our phased approach
We are five years into the Future of Education and planning the next five years.
First Phase: Years 1 – 2 – 2018–2020 (complete)
Insights gained from the first phase of implementation indicated that while progress was made, a renewed need to focus efforts on inclusion, student wellbeing, strengthening partnerships with school communities and learning gain for all students was required. These insights were used to set the priorities and actions for the second phase of implementation. See more on the Phase One implementation and evaluation.
Second Phase: Years 3 – 5 – 2021–2023 (concluded)
The second implementation plan built on the important gains made during our first implementation phase, while setting new priorities based on what we had learnt and what we know we still have to do. The focus has been on placing students in the centre, strengthening wellbeing, and ensuring equity, inclusion, access, and agency for all students.
Key initiatives included: strengthening inclusive education; expansion of equity grants to help low income families; making Chromebooks and internet access for families who need it; enhancing access to vocational education and training; and working with service and community partners to improve transitions for children and young people. An evaluation of Phase Two is in progress.
Third Phase: Years 5 – 10 – 2024–2028 (in development)
The third phase of the Future of Education is currently being developed, informed by lessons learned from phase two and feedback from the Future of Education Ideas Summit (491kb).
