Support for parents as first teachers

Engaging in your child’s learning and development in the early years

Phase one of Set up for Success: An early childhood strategy for the ACT pdf file (845kb) includes the foundation ‘Every child has a story’ and a commitment to supporting parents as their child’s first teacher.

Supporting parents as first teachers means empowering them to make informed choices in relation to early childhood development, early learning options and quality considerations, and being able to access the supports they need as parents.

Evidence shows that the early years set the foundation for every child’s social, physical, emotional and cognitive development. Parents, families, and carers are a child’s first and most important teachers. The ACT Government’s commitment to equity for children and young people begins at birth. It means supporting parents to develop their skills and access help when they need it.

The resources below have been developed in collaboration with ACT Health.
